First You Dream, Then You Die
Norma Bates and her youngest son Norman relocate to White Pine Bay, Oregon a mere 6 months after the death of her husband Sam. Hoping for a fresh start, Norma has bought a small motel in a foreclosure sale using up most of her insurance money. The place is run down and needs work, but Norma is excited to make a go at it. The former owner Keith Summers threatens Norma and news that the town may build a bypass around the town throws a wrench in her plans. Norman however is making a good impression on some of the girls at his high school. His mother isn't fond of the idea of him making friends and going out. So most of the time he stays home. The first time he sneaks out to hang out with the girls, Summers attacks his mother. There are things going on in this new town that they have not been told about and have yet to find out.

Trust Me
Luckily, Norman gets out of Deputy Sheriff Zack Shelby's house just in time, thanks to his brother Dylan who creates a diversion. The girl he found in the basement had to be left behind, but he plans on getting Emma to help rescue her. Norma doesn't believe Norman when he tells her what he found at Shelby's house. She tells him that he sometimes sees things that aren't really there and that Shelby's a nice guy. She promises Norman that the next time she stays over there she'll check it out. While at Shelby's, Norma decides to check the basement out for herself but finds no evidence of a girl living there. Norman consoles Bradley for the loss of her father and begins believing he's now dating her. Emma has been out of school sick, so Norman is left to his own reality without her. Zack Shelby tries to bond with Norman by taking him fishing only to find that Norman is an odd teen. The sheriff still suspects Norma in Summer's death and is even more suspect of her when Keith's hand is found in a fishing net. Norma subsequently has a meltdown and Norman confides in Dylan about it, telling him everything that's happened.

Ocean View
Norman is traumatized, just after his first love night, hearing Norma was arrested, and again when she blames him and ends up throwing him out of the car despite being granted bail. Equally discarded Dylan picks his kid brother up and offers to move into the place of his own he hopes to be able to offered soon, now his weed plantation job is earning nicely, and profits from shot dumb mate Ethan Chang's misfortune. While deputy Shelby breaks rules to save Norma's bacon, Norman confides in Emma about the captivated sketch book Asian girl.

The Truth
Dylan now earns well, gets a new partner and the boss's trust, so he feels ready to move into a motel and tells Norman it's time to leave Norma, suggesting she must have killed their -abusive- (step)father Sam Bates. Hearing that deputy Zack Shelby still uses Summers' belt to impose dates on Norma and keeps an Asian sex slave, which Emma is made to keep from the police 'for now', Dylan takes charge of a search in Zach's boat, where he actually finds the belt and disposes of it. A confrontation with Shelby is inevitable and bloody, while Norman refuses to let Norman go.

The Man in Number 9
Sheriff Alex Romero, alerted by a panic Norma, decides to leave the criminal secrets buried with Keith Sumers and the latest victim, his overzealous deputy Zack Shelby, so the Bates family seems of the hook. Dylan decides against moving out, seeing Norma's state of mind, and helps check out the mysterious, grimly aloof regular guest Jake Abernathy, who wants to keep renting the whole motel -otherwise deserted now it has a blood-haunted reputation- for a week on a monthly basis. Norman plans to move out alone in fury over maternal objections to taking in a stray dog, who meets a tragic end, and to his lustful affair with popular school fox Bradley Martin, who quickly tells the romantic knave he was just a one night stand, no relationship candidate.

A Boy and His Dog
Sheriff Romero accepts to keep quiet about the Zach debacle but warns Norma never to lean on him, notably to find a way to oppose the new highway which would drain the motel of potential guests. Norman enjoys learning taxidermy from Emma's father Will Decody by stuffing 'his' car-killed stray dog, Norma opposes the 'freak' hobby. Dylan considers his older weed plantation foreman Remo Wallace a lush looser, yet ends up siding with him against the troublemaker among the Californian Hippie-type pickers they pick up for the harvest processing. The school insists on therapy for recluse Norman and accepts that Norma chooses a private therapist, Dr. Kurata, but she turns on him for duly questioning her maternal domineering. Realizing that Jake Abernathy wants to rent the whole motel for dishonorable purposes, Norma cancels the deal, leaving Dylan's pickers as only guests.

Dylan risks his job by helping previous boss's daughter Bradley Martin sneak in and past Remo to seek a keepsake, only to stumble onto apparently adulterous love letters. His staff meanwhile brings drugs into the motel, a studly knave even feeds Emma Decody space cake. Norman is flattered that Enlish teacher Watson helps him prepare a short story for publication, but lacks the courage to asks Norma's permission after a row over her latest plan to start over, this time on Hawaii, as it looks the new highway will wreck the motel, but now Norma refuses to be uprooted. Norma's hope for an end to the Asian girls nightmare after s-the sheriff disposes of Zach's corpse are short-lived as Abernathy, who left too easily, resorts to every necessary mode of threat to demand his huge lost pimp profit share.

Norman has romantic dreams about the school dance with Emma but is betrayed and humiliated, ending up chased and battered in the rain. His inappropriately attracted teacher Watson insists to 'clean him up' before giving him a ride home. Sheriff Alex Romero not only helps Norma deal with blackmailer Jake Abernathy, but knows him as a many-faced fiend, takes over and turns to Keith Summers' related sister Maggie. Dylan accepted to teach Norma using a gun, but finds her unreliable and dangerous with or without arms.

After the revelations, Dylan gets drunk and passes out in his car. Caleb denies being his father and returns the money Dylan gave him. Dylan again confronts Norma and she admits she never told anyone, least of all Caleb, who his father was. An outraged Norman, again goes into acting out as his mother and visits Caleb at his motel. It's the morning after the night before for Emma who wakes up in bed with the boy she met at the beach party. Sheriff Romero warns Zane to take it easy or that there will be repercussions. Soon after, Romero finds that his house has gone up in flames.

Norman is processed in the precinct as obvious suspect fro the suspicious fatal fall of Emma's abusive father after their fight. George helps and calms Norma until sheriff Romero releases the knave, ruling it was an accident, but an overzealous deputy's DNA test matches him to the teacher's still uncleared strangulation.

The Box
Nick Ford pulls all registers to force Dylan to kill his rival Zane. Norma reacting too slowly, he kidnaps unwitting Norman and locks the knave in a concrete 'box', which fills with water and bugs, escape attempts only yield beatings. Dillon must report to Ford that he couldn't kill already paranoid Zane due to armed guards, leading to a surprise death. Meanwhile Norma wrecks her relationship with George and temporizes sheriff Romano's intent to question Norman about his teacher Watson's killing (which gives the boy nightmares), yet has to come clean about the knave's kidnapping.

The Immutable Truth
Sheriff Romero helps cover up Dylan's murder of rival drug baron Nick Ford and rescue Norman from his henchmen, in exchange for help to trap Zane. Norma can't handle it when Norman confides in her to have remembered murdering Blair Watson, so she claims his memory is blurred by traumas at the root of his episodes. Dylan stops her from uprooting their family for a hopeless fugue when the sheriff insists on a lie detector test, which Norman passes surprisingly, but he still makes a solo fugue.
