Prentiss had not seen either man in several years, both for different reasons. John also mentions that Matthew thought he was going to be killed just like "T. Valentine". In searching, Garcia does find someone matching that name in the area who recently died from dehydration. There are similarities between the two deaths but no medical rationale for tying the two together as murders. A third person in the area then dies in a similar way but again no medical indication of an unnatural death or rationale tying the death to the first two. However, Prentiss and Rossi, in particular within the team, are certain the three deaths are related and that they are indeed murders. They have to tread lightly and carefully since the families of the deceased refuse to speak to the FBI - especially Matthew's family who know, and do not like, Prentiss - and since there is no official case as the police have not sanctioned one. The investigation gets more complicated for the team when they find who they believe is the murderer.

Garcia leading a victims' support group is a measure to deal with the guilt associated with the death of her parents when she was a teenager, they who were looking for her past curfew late one evening when they were struck by a drunk driver. One of her closest friends in the group, Monica Kingston, just hit the seven year anniversary of the abduction of her then adolescent daughter Hope, who she believes is still alive. After the latest meeting, Garcia, who had just spoken to Monica, finds Monica's car left in the parking lot with the keys in the ignition and her purse on the front seat. Although the police can't act since there is no indication of foul play, Garcia is certain that something bad has happened to Monica. Garcia calls in her friends at the BAU for help. They find images of Monica with an unidentifiable man on a gas station surveillance video, and she seems to be voluntarily going with him. The location of the gas station and another sighting of Monica at her former house - where she lived with Hope - lead the team to believe that the man is the person who abducted Hope. Determining the unsub's current interest in Monica now as opposed to anytime over the past seven years may assist in locating the unsub and hopefully still alive Monica and Hope.

Divining Rod
Moments after serial killer Rod Garrett is executed by firing squad at Gunter State Prison, another person kills in Enid, Oklahoma where the prison is located. The victimology and M.O. are the same as in Garrett's killings - female, young, blonde, pretty, and killed with a single stab through the heart using an ice pick. By the time the BAU arrive on the scene hours later, the unsub has killed a second victim - same victimology, same M.O. Garrett is survived by his wife, Helen Garrett, who stood by her husband's side through his incarceration, since he stood by her side when she went through a life threatening illness years prior. When the unsub kills a third victim, the team notices slight differences between Garrett's killings and the latest killings, as well as there being a regulated time schedule to the recent murders. Those differences, information from Helen about herself and about fans of her husband's, and the geography of the latest killings provide clues as to the unsub's identity and his motivations for following in Garrett's footsteps. Meanwhile, Prentiss awaits news about an offer she placed on a house, which she seems nervous about getting.

Profiling 101
As a favor owed, Rossi presents a lecture to a university undergraduate class, the lecture at which the entire team participates to support their respected colleague. Their presentation, which provides the basics of profiling, uses one of their cases as its centerpiece. The case, which so far spans twenty years since 1992, is of perhaps the most prolific serial killer they have ever tracked, he who killed up and down the west coast of the United States. The presentation makes the team not only reminisce about the case itself, but how the current team members first met each other and worked on this case. Through the process of preparing for, delivering and following-up on the lecture, Rossi is a little preoccupied on this specific day - his birthday - for the annual ritual he needs to attend to in relation to the case itself.

It's a lazy Saturday morning, a day off for the BAU. Beth has come over to Hotch's house to spend the day with him and Jack. JJ is playing with Henry while Will goes off to work. Morgan is going through Prentiss' just purchased house with her, the purchase pending the inspection which she seems to want to go badly as she seems to have buyer's remorse. Reid is Garcia's unofficial date to a sci-fi convention since she and Kevin split over his planned marriage proposal. And Rossi is heading home to bed after an all night cigar aficionado event... or so he says to Garcia and Reid, who he runs into. Their collective quiet is shattered when they are called to a botched bank robbery attempt, at which Will and his partner are one of the first on the scene. The reason the team is called in is that this robbery is the latest in a string committed by a group calling themselves the Face Cards, since the three robbers wear a mask of a playing card king, queen and jack respectively. At each of the seven robberies thus far, they have been unidentifiable, and they have killed one person by a gunshot to the abdomen, which the police up to this point considered secondary to the robberies themselves. The three are holed up inside the bank with several hostages, they've killed their trademark one person, they have no way out and the "jack" has a serious gunshot wound inflicted by Will upon his arrival. There is a stated hierarchy within the group, with the "king" the leader. Using recognition software, Garcia is able to identify the two males as brothers Chris and Oliver Stratton, low level criminals. Even after she takes her mask off and plays to the the surveillance cameras, the "queen of diamonds" is unidentifiable. The career status of the brothers and the actions of the queen make the team come to the conclusion that she is really the leader and the one with a hidden agenda beyond her vanity and sadistic streak (as she is the one who has done all the killing thus far). They also learn that she is working with someone on the outside. They have to discover her identity, her motivation, and her outside accomplice before she kills more hostages.

The team is still attending to the latest bank robbery committed by the Face Cards. Following an explosion inside the bank orchestrated by the queen of diamonds, the team, after assessing the human casualties, find that the two surviving robbers - the "king" Chris Stratton, and the still unidentifiable queen of diamonds - have managed to escape, this method which they surmise was the queen's plan all along, with her association with the Stratton brothers and the robberies only a front for her grander plans. They also discover that Will, who was inside the bank at the time of the explosion and who was shot by Chris prior to the explosion, is probably still alive and the sole remaining hostage of Chris and the queen. After viewing the surveillance footage of inside the bank prior to the explosion, the team find out that their earlier assessment of the queen having an accomplice on the outside was only half correct, as the accomplice was one of the supposed hostages inside the bank. The team now have to figure out what the next violent move of the queen and her accomplice will be, which a worried JJ knows will now involve Will and most-likely Henry. At the conclusion of the case, many within the team, based partly on the events of the case, make life altering decisions.

That focus, another calling card left by the Replicator in what he believes is from a past case, and that he seems to have easy access to almost anywhere the team has access, leads to the team believing he works within the bureau. Looking at what the Replicator has done up to this point in time, they also believe the motive for his actions has something to do with what was the feud between Blake and Strauss. Even if the team does determine the identity of the Replicator, they have to tread carefully as the Replicator has thus far been able to manipulate the team into what he has wanted them to do, and his final end move may take place before they can find him.

The team is called back to Glendale, Arizona, when it is determined that who was arrested for the praying mantis murders was the wrong person. The two did not know of the other growing up. A paralegal, Jesse has a strong legal team, headed by his boss Mark Anderson, who threatens to sue the FBI if they continue to "harass" Jesse in any way. The team knows that Jesse is involved in the case in some manner as his reappearance after all these years cannot be coincidental. They also learn that Carla Hines is not as innocent as she first appeared, as in their search for Wallace and going through her house, they find that she tried to burn evidence, the nature of that evidence which they do not know. But they determine that that evidence probably has to do with whoever the twins' biological father, whose identity Carla has never divulged.

Mateo Cruz has just been introduced as the new section chief. A surprised J.J., who knows him, and Cruz seem not to want to divulge that they have a history. They don't even seem to want to let the team know that they know each other, which may be difficult to hide amongst a group of profilers. Cruz wants to accompany the team into the field on their next case, which takes them to Baltimore, Maryland, where a young John Doe was found stumbling around a warehouse district. Alive, he has ligature marks on his wrists, and drill marks in the corner of his eyes which they determine was a just performed lobotomy. He ends up paralyzed without the ability to speak, but his mental faculties seem to be in tact. Through what slow communication Morgan is able to do with him, Morgan learns that the unsub is white male that the victim did now know, and that there was a female victim as well, who is probably still captive. The team believes the unsub held him captive in one of the nearby warehouses, and that he let him go purposefully. This M.O. does not seem to match with the fact of choosing as the victim who the team believes travels in a circle where he would not be soon missed. When a further medical examination is done on the victim, they learn the purpose for letting him go: a microscopic camera was inserted in his eye, meaning that the unsub has been watching everything going on. Through this technology, the team is able to communicate to the unsub, who takes more direct measures in showing the team what he is up to. The key to finding who the unsub is still rests with identifying the victim, and tying him to a similar case that occurred recently in Berlin, Germany.

During the BAU's initial briefing for their latest case, Hotch collapses. He is rushed to the hospital suffering from complications resulting from his near fatal stabbing by George Foyet aka The Reaper. Meanwhile, the rest of the team, while concerned for his life, are urged by Rossi to go to Wichita, Kansas to work on that case of sixteen year old Samantha Wilcox who was abducted by her ex-con father, Eddie Lee Wilcox. In the process, Eddie severely beat Samantha's boyfriend. Eddie had not been in contact with his ex-wife, Samantha's mother Melody Grimes, in quite some time, she who moved with Samantha to Wichita to get away from him. In reviewing evidence, the team believes Samantha may not have plotted with her father, but was a willing participant in their getaway. She is probably unaware however of her father's most recent past, which looks to include armed robbery, mob connections and murder, from which he is probably running. They're afraid that Samantha may not survive if Eddie is pushed into a corner. Back at the hospital, Hotch is in surgery, during which time he encounters Haley and Foyet together in his thoughts, which may determine his fate on the operating table.

The Return
Morgan is perturbed by a recent event in his new relationship with his current girlfriend Savannah, that event which Garcia is able to shed some light on for him. Meanwhile, the team heads to Chicago, Illinois where sixteen year old Gavin Rossler opened fire in a downtown diner, killing three before being shot dead by off duty police officer Ryan Clayburn, who was eating in the diner at the time. The reason this case has come to the BAU is that Gavin was listed as being a runaway/abducted four years earlier, that classification uncertain due to the unreliability of information coming from his single mother. The autopsy showed that Gavin had recently suffered some broken bones in his arms, like someone had bent it, and had powder burn marks on his temples, which they believe was being shot with blanks. The team initially believes the killings to be gang related. Surveillance video shows that Gavin was dropped off outside the diner, who Garcia eventually finds out is seventeen year old Trevor Madison. Trevor was listed as missing less than 24 hour after Gavin four years ago. That information with an attack by Trevor leads the team to believe that the boys were abducted by the unsub who trained/brainwashed them to be his soldiers to carry out whatever his mission, and that there are probably other boys that he has abducted to be his brainwashed soldiers. As the team tries to determine the identities of possible other soldiers, they come across some information which leads them to the identity of the unsub. Locating him before he carries out his grand mission, or before he abducts more soldiers if the mission fails, may however be more difficult.

While fixing a burst water main, a city works crew digs up the back yard of the home of the Johnsons - father Charles, mother Tina, and their middle aged son Lyle - upon Tina's approval. The Johnsons have lived at the house for thirty-five years. The crew finds the skeletons of two human bodies buried in the yard. The BAU takes the three members of the Johnson family in for questioning, who they believe know something about the skeletons, primarily because Lyle ran when he saw the authorities at the house. While Hotch, JJ, Morgan, Rossi and Cruz question the Johnsons individually, Lyle initially comes across as the most guilty by his animosity, however the team eventually believes his attitude is more a facade hiding other issues. Charles also demonstrates a more reserved form of animosity, he being a history buff who continually implies how he and his family, as being black, have been persecuted, this situation being no different. The identification of the two bodies and of the others which are eventually found in the yard, in addition to what Reid and Blake are able to find in the Johnson house may piece the puzzle together. Meanwhile, JJ wants to divulge to the team the fact that she and Cruz have been on special assignment, against Cruz's wants.

The Caller
The BAU heads to St. Louis, Missouri where ten year old Andrew Taffert has gone missing. The reason it is a BAU case is that the Tafferts - father Malcolm Taffert and mother Lida Taffert - had been receiving prank calls from someone with a childlike voice stating "I'm gonna get you", and that blood was splattered on their front door after Andy had gone missing. Reid notices that this case is much like a fifteen year old cold case that the BAU worked on where the parents in that situation received such prank calls prior to their son being abducted and eventually found dead. The father in that case, Richard Clayvin, was always considered a suspect. As such, Malcolm is initially considered a prime suspect, especially considering his over controlling temperament. The similarity between the two cases extends to the post-abduction prank calls with the voice changing its statement to, "Did you see what I did?". But as the investigation progresses, which includes re-interviewing Richard Clayvin, the team may have to find other similarities before they can identify the unsub.

Having just received an unexpected gift from him in the mail, Rossi heads to Los Angeles to check up on his Vietnam War vet friend Harrison Scott, about who he is worried. Meanwhile, the rest of the team heads to Cleveland, Ohio, where four murders in the span of ninety minutes occurred. The first two victims were gang members shot in a park, the third another gang member who was at the first shooting but who the unsub tracked down later at a gas station a mile away, and the fourth victim someone waiting at a bus stop half mile away. That fourth victim is later identified as a mugger, leading the team to believe that the unsub may be exacting some form of vigilante justice. That witnesses refuse to cooperate strengthens this assumption, in that the unsub is doing a valuable public service. The unsub is described as a middle aged white male in crumpled clothing, and smelling like alcohol. The team is quickly able to identify the unsub and learn his story, and as such they believe his first kills were opportunistic, but that he is now on a mission based killing spree. They just have to determine what his exact mission is.

The BAU travels to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where three dead bodies, in various stages of decomposition, are found in a remote location of a nature preserve several hours outside the city, the most recent victim two weeks dead. There are signs that the victims were held captive before being killed. The coroner finds that there are human bite marks made post-mortem on some of the victims. Who is determined as the first victim, Melvin Lewis, seems like the odd victim in that he did not have any human bite marks on him, but his occupation as animal control specialists points Reid to the possibility that the unsub is killing his victims from rabies, first from a wild animal to human, then each human passing it along to the next victim. The coroner confirms the assumption. Garcia is able to cross reference past rabies cases in the area to people who work in the animal control business, which may provide the identity of the unsub. The reason for the unsub's need to watch his victims die of rabies and where the unsub is keeping his prisoners will take further digging. Regardless, the team needs to be hyper-vigilant if only because of the crazed nature of any others in captivity. Meanwhile, Reid and Garcia don't want to let anyone know, especially athletic Morgan, that they are training for their upcoming mandatory fit test.

The BAU travels to Memphis, Tennessee, where three people, in separate incidents, have gone missing, each abducted in a parking lot. On the surface, there is no connection between the three victims, in that they are different genders and different ages. In the latest abduction, two women friends were targeted in the incident, but only one ultimately abducted, meaning that the unsub is targeting specific people or specific types. Debbie Martin, the woman not abducted in the latest incident, was able to witness much of what happened in her friend Christy White's abduction, including that the unsub was wearing a pig mask, and used a taser to subdue his victims. The BAU is eventually able to tie all three victims to a frat party that happened about a year ago in Mecklinburg, where a pledge died in an initiation hazing incident. The belief is that the unsub is seeking revenge for that death. But when one of the victims is found, the BAU believes they have to dig a little deeper into what happened the entire night of the party to determine the unsub's full motivation and "her" identity. Meanwhile, JJ is able to shed some light on a recent incident between Morgan and Savannah which threatened their relationship.

The BAU travels to Long Beach, California, where several people have been killed by arsenic poisoning, but not before they are sent a handwritten note telling them about their imminent demise. Beyond some geographic similarities, there is seemingly no other ties between the victims. Based on statements by those who were with the victims either before their deaths or when they may have consumed the arsenic, the BAU believes they at least have a general physical description of the unsub, he being a heavy set fortyish man driving an older model green sedan. Later in the investigation, the BAU also finds that the unsub has been leaving pieces of twine on the victims, which leads to Reid figuring out that the unsub's modus operandi is based on Greek mythology. After they find the ties between the victims, the BAU will have to discover the unsub's stressor to discover his identity and potential future targets. Meanwhile, Hotch is concerned about the request for him to speak at Jack's third grade class' career day about life as an FBI profiler, especially as it is this job that directly was responsible for the death of Jack's mother.

Amelia Porter
Rossi learns that Hotch and Beth have broken up due to distance as Hotch encouraged her to accept a job offer in Hong Kong. Before Rossi can help Hotch commiserate and move on, they and the rest of team need to head to Salt Lake City, Utah to investigate three associated homicides. One victim is a security guard, who was found dead at the remote office building where he worked. The second and third victims are husband and wife Ron and Karen Meyerson, who were shot in their home, the murder weapon being the security guard's gun. The Meyersons were having marital difficulties due primarily to living beyond their means. Because of the erratic nature of the unsub's actions, the team believes the murders were personal in nature and of opportunity rather than the victims being targeted. They find holes dug in the Meyerson's backyard, the unsub probably looking for something. Looking into the history of that home, the team is certain the unsub is twenty-nine year old Benton Farland. Twelve years ago at age seventeen, he was in a relationship with the home's owner at the time, then thirty year old Amelia Porter, the two who, high on drugs, raped and murdered his then twenty-one year old sister, Miriam Farland. Benton served twelve years for the crime - the relatively short term due to his age and providing evidence against Amelia - he who has just been released. Amelia, however, fled and has been living off the grid since, probably under an alias. Known to have survival skills, Amelia has only surfaced twice in twelve years, both times able to hide in outdoor remote locations. The team also discovers that Benton is working with someone, they discovering that that person is Andy Farland, Miriam's now grown son. Based on what they know of Andy's therapy, they believe that he either empathizes with his Uncle Benton's plight, or is trying to protect their other traveling companion, Andy's younger sister, Rebecca Farland, from Benton, who seems to be desperate. The team has to discover if Benton has a plan, and if so what it is so that they can follow his predicted movements with Andy and Rebecca in tow.

The Forever People
The BAU's next case takes them to Boulder City, Nevada, where a Jane Doe was found frozen to death - the natural elements in the area which would be unable to achieve that state - weighted down in Lake Mead, with J.J. noticing a electric shock burn mark above the breastbone which would have revived the victim as she froze to death. She is eventually identified as Sarah Rhodes of Kingman, Arizona, a mother of ten year old Bobby Rhodes, she who made regular ATM withdrawals of $260 every month near Boulder City. Examining Sarah's body and reviewing the ME report, J.J. is able to figure out that Sarah was a cult member, the near death to revival simulating a state of euphoria upon "rebirth". The team believes Bobby is still within the cult. They not only have to find the cult and its leader in order to find Bobby, but tie it and him to the deaths, which may be difficult to do unless they can find ex or current members willing to testify. Hotch and Rossi discover an unusual twist to the case once they locate the cult compound. Through the process, Reid notices that J.J. is going through something emotionally, probably having to do with it approaching the one year anniversary of her abduction and torture. But there are aspects of the case that bring those thoughts of one year ago to the forefront of her mind.

Rossi's planned vacation to go fishing with his daughter Joy is postponed when he learns that his old friend from the Marines, Harrison Scott, has just passed away from cancer. As such, Rossi heads to Los Angeles to pay his respects. In doing so, he gets some surprised support of his own. Meanwhile, the rest of the team heads to Tallahassee, Florida, where two people have been found shot in separate incidents with the same gun. Both were found in places of sanctuary, outside a hospital emergency and outside a church. While the hospital victim is alive but brain dead, the church victim died. While the team is en route to Tallahassee, there is a third victim, who also dies from his injuries. An eyewitness to the third shooting noticed that the shooter was careful where he shot the victim, almost like he didn't want to kill the victim or didn't want the victim to die quickly. Also consistent with the first two shootings, first responders were on the scene immediately, as if the unsub wanted the victim to be found quickly. The team will learn that a 911 call was made prior to the incident actually happening. But subsequent shootings, inconsistent with the first three, will alert to team to the connection between all the victims, and why the unsub has chosen his targets. They just have to determine how the unsub chooses his targets to locate him and his potential next targets.

Beyond Borders
The BAU assists its international counterpart within the Bureau - the unit which is comprised of head Jack Garrett, Agent Lily Lambert, Agent Matthew Simmons, and analyst Russ Montgomery - on its next case. It takes most of the team to Barbados, where the Washington DC residing Sullivan family - parents Gary and Colleen Sullivan and their two children, Alison and Nick Sullivan - are abducted while they are on vacation there. The reason the BAU is brought in is because the case looks to be the work of a serial unsub as similarly comprised American families have been abducted and ultimately murdered while on vacation, the first known in Aruba, and the second in Florida. In all three instances, the incidents took place in April. In general, the BAU handles the behavioral analysis of the case, while the international unit looks at the situation based on their knowledge of the countries in which they are dealing and of international law. Rossi, Hotch, Morgan, JJ, Garrett, Lambert and Simmons are in Barbados to deal with the local authorities and work on the ground. Reid and Callahan remain in DC to look into leads found at the Sullivan home, and review the case in relation to what happened in Aruba and Florida. And Garcia and Monty continue their analysis work at the office, Garcia who finds one fundamental difference between her job and Monty's. They all know they have to work fast before the Sullivans are found murdered like the families before them.

A Place at the Table
Four members covering three generations of the wealthy Kingman family of Bethesda, Maryland are murdered in their home: mother Donna Kingman, two of her adult children Jenna and Lance Kingman, and Donna's mother, Clara. They are found sitting around the dining room table with six formal place settings, their hands tied behind the backs of their chairs, three shot execution style in the back of the head, with Donna strangled. Although the team will learn that it was Donna's birthday party dinner, there was Jingle Bells playing on the phonograph, unusual since it is April. The six place settings were set post-mortem. The team will learn that the missing father, Frank Kingman, is not well liked by his family, he being controlling and opinionated, while Donna was the exact opposite, loved by everyone. The team also receives conflicting stories from oldest son Dillon Kingman, Jenna's boyfriend Marc Clifford, and Lance's gay lover Ezra Warren, the latter who is found in the house, but who states he left the party and passed out from taking hash on Lance's bed and thus was oblivious to the murders taking place. The team will have to wade through the stories to see who would have the motive to kill the family, holding the greatest grudge against Donna, while figuring out who symbolically were supposed to be the other two dinner guests. Hotch is dealing with much of this case remotely from home as he deals with an emergency with his father-in-law Roy Brooks, who he has just learned from Haley's sister, Jessica, is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's. Dealing with Roy will not be easy as belligerent Roy has never forgiven Hotch for what happened to Haley.

The BAU heads to Las Vegas, New Mexico where three young people are found murdered after hours in a local restaurant, all employees. The restaurant and the three victims were robbed, and the restaurant torched, probably as a forensic move to burn any evidence. This case mimics a case six years ago in the town, four people killed in that earlier case. The team members believe the unsub has some connection to Las Vegas, that connection which may be difficult to determine if only because of Las Vegas being a crossroads with people coming and going all the time. The team determines that the latest murders are not by a copycat but by the original perpetrator based on issues of the case similar to both that were never made public. The team also determines that there is more than one unsub, most-likely a pair, only one who was involved in the case six years ago. Later evidence shows that the two may not be as singularly focused leading to the pair possibly parting ways, perhaps in a violent manner against each other. They have to determine the original unsub's connection to Las Vegas both to identify him and protect the people associated to the reason for his return.

The Atlanta field office requests the BAU's assistance in a case with two victims thus far, both stabbed multiple times to death, both victims found bound in different truck stop rest rooms, one outside of Chattanooga and one outside of Birmingham, posed post-mortem, both victims missing their left ear, with the murders probably taking place elsewhere as concluded by the lack of blood at the scenes. The wounds indicate indecisiveness and inexperience in the act of killing, while the posed bodies in highly public locales indicates the exact opposite of experience in the act, leading to the competing theories that there are two people working together, or one person who has long fantasized about what he is doing and is only now being able to act upon those fantasies. One victim is a homeless John Doe, while the other is a well regarded schoolteacher. When a third victim emerges with a slightly different M.O. in that she was killed at the disposal site, the team knows that the victims are targeted and not random, that there is only one unsub who was removed from his family at a young age and is now getting revenge on those associated with the family court and welfare system, but that the unsub is being fed information by someone in the generation above his on who to target. When the team believes they have discovered the identities of both the unsub and his older information provider, the latter who may not know what he's doing, the question becomes whether the older partner will give up the other in the pairing.

The BAU heads to the Los Angeles, California area, where two women, in separate incidents, were found murdered within a day of each other, each found in their own home with no sign of forced entry, both single, and both having died of asphyxiation from being wrapped pre-mortem by a regular household item like a blanket or rug. By the time the team arrives at the Los Angeles FBI field office where they are basing their investigation, a third dead body with the same victimology is discovered. From surveillance footage at the third victim's apartment complex, the team believes the unsub is either masquerading as an FBI agent or truly is one. When the team determines that he is only masquerading as one, but that he needs to gain the confidence of his victims by real world events, they decide to set a trap for him that is potentially dangerous for the public. But in doing so, they, in the process, learn of an unfortunate real life tie to the agency. Through it all, Morgan can't help but worry about a text he received from Savannah before the team left for Los Angeles in her need for them "to have a talk".

Devil's Backbone
The authorities believed that two Virginia based cases of missing boys, Adam Morrissey and Jimmy Bennett, from two years ago were unrelated, until their bloodied clothes, those in which they were last seen, had just arrived in one intercepted package at Fletcham Correctional Center in Troy, Virginia. The addressee of that package is Antonia Slade, a serial killer of young teens, she who was convicted in part by work of the BAU, most specifically Gideon. A social worker, she ran a fake youth hot-line as a means to lure her victims to her home, where the dead bodies of the young teens were found encased behind her basement drywall. Since, she has never talked about the murders, and has refused all visitors. However, she seems to know about the clothes and the missing boys before the BAU's arrival at the facility to speak to her. They know that she, a narcissist despite not responding to the correspondence from any of her legion of groupies, has no compelling reason to talk to them unless there is something she knows, divulging which would be to her benefit. In speaking to her, the team members find that she is controlling, and any accomplice or associate to her criminal activities would have to be the submissive. Beyond cryptic statements, the one thing she is clear about is that Adam and Jimmy are still alive, but for how long is uncertain. The team discovers that she is indeed corresponding to the outside world through unofficial means, they needing to find how, to whom and what those messages state for them to find a hopefully still alive Adam and Jimmy.

Surface Tension
Reid has returned from Houston, where he was visiting his mother who is in a new facility on an experimental drug program. He is called back home from the office while the rest of the team heads off on their next case. It isn't until the team is in the air that they learn that Diana is no longer in the Houston facility, but that she is now living with Reid, as the trial drug was not having the intended effect. Reid had received professional advice that his mother should be in a facility both for her and his own good, but it may be news from a more caring rather than clinical voice which may carry more weight with him. Regardless, he makes himself available to the team, who are in the Tampa, Florida area where two individual deaths have occurred, both now considered murders, the two tied together by ink drawings on the inner arms of the victims, the second victim's whose has one more stroke of the pen than the first. The M.E. is able to determine that the markings were made with the same pen. The death of the first victim, a model suburban soccer mom, was initially ruled a suicide from an overdose of sleeping pills, her own prescription. The second victim, a homeless man, died of a heroin overdose, he who was known not to be a drug user, but rather an advocate for the homeless to get those in need into drug rehab programs. As such, they were both killed using the tools of their life, they presupposing that the unsub forced them to kill themselves. With two subsequent victims, the team also gathers more evidence: that the victims post-mortem were taken to outdoor sites with disturbed ground, and the unsub is connected in some way to fire. The identification of the ink markings in relation to the aspect of the disturbed ground may provide the key to finding where the unsub will strike next.

To a Better Place
Following the final incident with Scratch, the team has been taking a mandatory break to decompress. In addition, Reid has gone through his reinstatement evaluation, he who has been conditionally reinstated without the possibility of negotiation on that condition. In their time off, there has been a backlog of cases. However, they depart to Naples, Florida on a case of some currency, as a female has just been discovered murdered, her body stuffed into an old suitcase and placed in a public location. She is the second victim, the first as of yet an unidentifiable Jane Doe whose body had decomposed beyond a state of visual identification. By the time the team lands in Naples, a third victim is discovered. Beyond the suitcase in a public locale, the other similarities between the two identified victims is gender, that they were strangled, and that the same old fashioned shade of lipstick had been smeared on their mouth area. The lipstick and the suitcases indicate that there is some vintage aspect to the unsub's psyche, and that a probable stressor is being abandoned by a female, probably the unsub's mother when he was a child. They also discover that both women were in the process of a romantic evening, friends who can attest that they were careful women not prone to reckless dating. JJ surmises that the unsub is able to lure his victims unwittingly using a Florence Nightingale complex, in that they are attracted to some "broken" aspect to his personality. It isn't until the first victim is identified that a tie between all three victims is discovered. By that time, the team believes that the unsub probably has an ultimate victim in mind, who they have to discover before she becomes an actual victim. In the process of the case, Reid will demonstrate, at least in this case, if the evaluation committee was correct in their concerns about him.

The BAU team members head to Detroit, Michigan where two men in two weeks have been discovered dead. Both were married, Caucasian, mildly successful professionals. Both were found in very public places hanging by a meat hook, naked and their private parts cut off pre-mortem. The authorities eventually receive a snuff movie of the second victim, Curtis Wyler, including the entire time it took him to bleed out to death. The team analyzes the video in order to find any clues as to the unsub's whereabouts. Garcia discovers that both men had been systematically withdrawing large sums of money from their bank accounts, small enough not to be questioned by the banks. In questioning the Wyler's wife, the team believes that both men were probably using the money for the services of an escort. What Garcia finds is that it is not an escort service, but rather an online dating site, Blue Siren, where members arrange their own meetings. Both victims had been involved with the same member, a woman with the online handle Dasha, who had recently discontinued her membership. The team is able to locate Dasha, who admits to her involvement with the victims, but does not know why anyone would want to kill them. She is concerned that the unsub may be after her. The unsub is after her, but not in the way that she anticipates.

Upon Rossi's arrival at the house, the case turns from a cold to active one as not only more mummified bodies from the same era are discovered in various hidden locations in the house - all those eventually determined to be deceased about twenty years, the victims young probably high risk lifestyle women the reason they were never reported missing - but also more recent mummified bodies, deceased about one year, these victims who are eventually determined to be middle aged women. The twenty year victims can only be attributed to the home's only other owners, hermits Carl and Dorothy Elgin. Carl has since died and Dorothy, suffering from dementia, resides in a nursing home in town, she who may not be willing or able to provide any information in her mental state. Someone who emerges as knowing what happened in the Elgin home twenty years ago may provide at least the seed of not only what happened with the twenty year victims, but also the more recent victims. The team has to work fast as another middle aged woman, Mary Brewer, has gone missing and is assumed to be the latest target of the more recent unsub. Back with Rossi's vacation, it involves a part of his life he would not yet like to divulge to his friends and colleagues at the BAU.

Despite there being only one victim, Prentiss decides to investigate the murder of Melissa Wallace of Tallahassee, Florida as the BAU's next case, that choice due to the seeming ritualistic nature of the murder. Melissa, barefoot and wearing only her nightshirt, was found dead, tied to a tree in the woods about a quarter mile from the Wallace home, with her husband Danny Wallace away on a business trip at the time, and their two children - thirteen year old Jacob Wallace and adolescent Lizzie Wallace - asleep at home. There was no sign of forced entry meaning that Melissa was probably lured out of the house on an emergency. She died of blunt force trauma to the head, and although there was a neatly piled collection of limestone rocks nearby, the coroner is able to determine that such a rock was not the murder weapon. If not for his alibi including Garcia finding CCTV footage of his car on the road around the time of the murder, the BAU would have suspected Danny as the murderer. While most of the profilers head to Tallahassee to investigate, Prentiss and Rossi remain in Virginia as the Wallaces had only recently moved from Arlington, Prentiss and Rossi who will try to find out about the Wallaces' lives in Arlington and the reason for the move. They discover that the Wallaces are an evangelical family, with Melissa having quit her job in Arlington to home school the children probably due to their religious beliefs. However, they also learn that Melissa had recently stopped going to church and was unhappy about something in her life, that something which could have been a dysfunctional marriage with possible domestic abuse on Melissa, Jacob and Lizzie by Danny. This evidence places more question on Danny as being the murderer, his alibi which they have to overcome. They have to discover the true nature of the secret Melissa was keeping to find out the truth. Throughout this case, Prentiss can see that Garcia is out of sorts. Prentiss had tried to persuade Garcia to take some time off following her recent hostage situation. But there may be more to Garcia's emotional distress than just being held hostage.

The Tall Man
The BAU heads to East Allegheny, Pennsylvania to investigate the story of teenager Ally Macready who stumbled out the wooded area known as Dead Man's Conservatory to report that she saw the "Tall Man", who is holding her two friends, Chelsea Davis and Bethany Wilson. The Tall Man is an old fashioned "dare to go into the woods" local legend which as of late has exploded in popularity among the locals on the Internet. The story of the Tall Man is that he will cut you until you divulge your deepest, darkest secrets. Ally's injuries are consistent with the legend. JJ accompanies the team to East Allegheny, her hometown, where she vowed never to return due to her traumatic childhood, with her parents always fighting and her older sister Roslyn Jareau, eighteen at the time, having committed suicide, an eleven year old JJ who found her dead body in the family's bathtub. JJ still wears the necklace Roslyn gave to her shortly before she died. JJ is well aware of the Tall Man legend and can provide insight into the matter. The doctor's examination of Ally and the team discovering some information about her background provide some real world clues as to what's going on, at least in explaining the inconsistencies of her story. As the team gets further into the investigation, the more and more difficult it becomes for JJ as it dredges up old feelings of why she vowed never to return, especially as what is happening now may be connected to what happened to Roslyn, with Chelsea's father, Tom Davis, being Roslyn's serious boyfriend just before she killed herself.

The BAU's next case is investigating a series of murders of men along the eastern seaboard. The victims were traveling along different sections of highway, when they were shot point blank at the back of the head. The victimology of mainly middle class men makes the theory of they being targeted by a hit-man, the type of murders the hallmark of targeted hits, less plausible, unless the victims were part of an unknown targeted list, such as people within the witness protection program. The other possible theory is that the unsub is acting in the role of personal enforcer on some sort of vendetta. It isn't until a subsequent victim is discovered, one that was made to drink bleach before he was still killed by being shot in the back of the head, that Alvez in particular believes he knows the identity of the unsub, namely a "Sicario" named Eduardo Ramos who worked for one of the most ruthless drug cartels in Mexico. When Alvez was partnered with Phil Brooks in the manhunter unit of the agency, they worked on the Ramos case, he who used to make his victims drink bleach before he killed them. Alvez was able to apprehend Ramos, who was imprisoned but who eventually escaped. Ramos seems to be working down the list of people who were involved in his life in one way or another, meaning that Brooks and Alvez themselves may be upcoming targets. But when they learn that Ramos was murdered in Mexico, other information that comes to light leads to the identity of the unsub. This case turns more personal for Alvez, with his girlfriend Lisa, who has just moved with him, potentially in danger. Because of the personal nature of the case to Alvez, Prentiss, who takes him off the case, is still worried that he might try to matters into his own hands.

Twenty Seven
Working with the FBI's Washington, DC field office led by Agent Andrew Mendoza, the BAU investigates what has been so far three machete attacks on the busy streets of various parts of the city over the course of an hour. The unsub, a black male, is wearing a white bandanna covering the lower part of his face, and as such isn't totally hiding his identity. The three victims, each who has survived the initial attack, range in age, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, matching that the attacks have occurred in rich neighborhoods as well as poor neighborhoods. With the rate of the attacks, they know that they have approximately thirty minutes until the unsub strikes again. After some interviews with loved ones of the victims, Lewis determines that the unsub is working on some motivation of inequality in society. She and Alvez are further able to determine that the victims were transported to the site of the attack by the unsub, which means that they are dealing not with an unsub but with unsubs, as one is behind the wheel while the other is subduing the victim. And in reviewing the 911 calls to report the various attacks, Prentiss and Mendoza discover two things: that in each of the three attacks, a call was made two minutes prior to the actual attack occurring, meaning that the unsubs themselves made those calls in an effort to have the first responders on the scene earlier than later perhaps in order to save the victims; and that the attacks have taken place not on an average of thirty minutes apart but rather exactly twenty-seven minutes apart. They have to discover the importance of the twenty-seven minutes to understand the motivations of the unsubs.

The team heads to Wesser, Iowa where three unrelated ten year olds from stable middle class families went missing from their homes in the middle of the night, and thus feared abducted. There was no sign of forced entry at any of the homes, there has been no ransom request, and the children went missing wearing only their pajamas. Just before the team boards the plane to head to Wesser, Garcia receives a surveillance video from the authorities in Wesser, it showing the three in a park that night after they went missing, each in a zombie-like state, like they were under some sort of post-hypnotic suggestion, being lured into a white panel van before being whisked away. That zombie-like state leads the team to believe that the unsub knew the children and had somehow planted that post-hypnotic suggestion into their psyches over time. They also begin to believe that the method of delivery of that message was through their electronic devices, and that the children are not the ultimate targets but just a means to hurt his ultimate targets. As the town goes into a lock-down mode of sorts, the case is made all the more difficult by Wesser's mayor, Rob Tremaine, a demanding person who wants the case quickly wrapped up in a proverbial tidy bow, with he blaming the team if they cannot do that for him. He seems more concerned about the public perception of his leadership than he is about the fact that he too has an adolescent son who is a potential target. The one profiler who has remained in Quantico is J.J., who is assigned to remote consulting duties on the case as she has an emergency visit from her mother, Sandy Jareau, with who she has had a strained relationship ever since the death of J.J.'s older sister, Roz, when J.J. was a child.
