Dark Descent
A bereavement counsellor maintains a seemingly normal family and marital life and while pretending to work on a support hotline at night, instead goes out and commits meticulously well planned murders on adult women.

Darkness Visible
Sarah Kay's sister finds her dead in her bed. The police soon descend on the house and Det. Supt. Stella Gibson examines the scene with medical examiner Reed Smith. There is little doubt they are dealing with the same killer. ACC Jim Burns, still reluctant to accept the idea that they are dealing with a serial killer, agrees to Stella's suggestion that she be put in charge of the investigation. Smith finds that Kay was several weeks pregnant. Spector meanwhile gets upset when he realizes that his babysitter has tried to steal the locket of hair he took from his latest victim. DS James Olson, with whom Stella spent the previous night, is making good progress in his own case. Someone is waiting for him for him when he gets home however.

Insolence & Wine
Det. Supt. Stella Gibson is now the senior investigating officer in charge of the case. She selects her deputy SIO's and the rest of the team. At a press conference the same day, they formally announce that the three murders are the work of one killer and seek the assistance of the public. When she learns that the dead police officer is Jimmy Olson, she immediately advises ACC Jim Burns of their one night stand the day he died. She is interviewed by DCI Eastwood who is in charge of the Olson investigation but she has little to tell him. Meanwhile, Paul Spector is upset when a news report states that Sarah Kay was several weeks pregnant. He begins planning his next kill. His young daughter continues to have bad dreams and tells her mother about the naked women in the ceiling.

My Adventurous Song
DCI Eastwood tells Burns that he took a call on Olson's phone which was made at a hotel by rogue cop Rob Breedlove, whom they link to Aaron Monroe, his businessman father Morgan and a prostitution racket. When quizzed about it Breedlove kills himself but Burns confronts Morgan Monroe with his findings. Spector is censured by his boss for making an impromptu and empathetic house call to his client Liz Tyler, a battered wife whose husband James has complained about him. However Spector ensures that Liz goes to a refuge whilst arranging for her husband's arrest. Spector sends a bizarre, anonymous letter to Sarah Kay's father, claiming he would not have killed her if he had known she was pregnant. Stella believes it is less a case of remorse than annoyance that his 'perfect' murder was tainted but allows Mr Kay to make a public appeal nonetheless. A friend of pathologist Reed Smith comes forward and tells Stella she once met a one night stand whom she knew only as Peter who tried to throttle her whilst having sex and wonders if he is the murderer. Whilst she is being interviewed Spector kills his next victim and her partner.

The Vast Abyss
Paul Spector's attack on Annie Brawley doesn't go as planned. She returns home with her brother Jack forcing Spector to deal with both of them. He kills Jack and Annie survives, though she is in critical condition in hospital. Spector flees the scene but arrives home to find his wife working late at the hospital and their 15 year-old babysitter in charge of the children. When the BBC shows CCTV footage of Sarah Kay, Spector's daughter also sees herself and her father walking not far behind. Spector's wife insists that he go to the police station even if he saw nothing. He does so, but his wife has to lie to provide him with an alibi leading to a major rift in his marriage, At the station, Stella Gibson speaks to Dr. Smith's friend who had a nasty encounter at university with someone named Peter. She also gets an interesting piece of forensic evidence from the letter Spector wrote to Sarah's father. After Sarah's father issues a public request for the killer to stop, Spector telephones Stella. Meanwhile, DCI Eastwood confronts ACC Jim Burns after learning that Aaron Monroe had fled their jurisdiction.

Beauty Hath Strange Power
The partial fingerprint from the murder weapon leads the police to Paul Spector, who is now their number one suspect. A follow-up interview with Paul's wife Sally confirms that he wasn't home as he he claimed. Babysitter Katie however provides Paul with an alibi saying he had come home early and that they were together until the wee hours of the morning. In return, Katie wants to know if he's the killer but he convinces her he's not but that Stella Gibson is hounding him. Paul manages to get into Stella's hotel room where he reads her diary - and leaves her a note to make sure she knows he was there.

The Mind Is Its Own Place
After Paul Spector's nighttime visit to her hotel room, Stella has the room thoroughly searched and dusted for fingerprints. In reviewing CCTV footage of the corridor leading to her room, she realizes Spector was in the room during the time she and ACC Jim Burns had their misunderstanding. Spector tries to again visit Annie Brawley at the hospital but Stella is one step ahead of him this time. They hope he will lead them to Rose Stagg but the police are concerned when the body of an unidentified female is found. The police enter Spector's house while he's away with his wife but have to leave after an embarrassing failure. Spector quickly realizes someone was in the house and he turns to Katie to vent his frustrations.

The Perilous Edge of Battle
The police begin to stitch together Paul Spector's past history. They now know that he was adopted by the Spector family, who had adopted or fostered many children. ACC Jim Burns visits one time but now defrocked priest Father Jensen - in jail as a convicted pedophile - who worked an orphanage where Jensen lived for several years. He remembers Paul well and the police learn that the boy was then known as Peter Baldwin. Rose has been missing for four days and the hope that Spector will lead them to her is the only thing keeping the police from arresting him. Katie meanwhile leads the police to Spector's hotel room where she is arrested for destroying evidence. Spector's unexpected encounter with irate husband Jimmy Tyler forces the police to accelerate his arrest and that of his wife Sally Ann.

Silence and Suffering
Determined that he should stand trial Stella has Spector taken to hospital, along with Rose and Tom Anderson, whose arm may be permanently damaged. Plain-speaking Dr O'Donnell supervises the operation on Spector whilst Chief Constable Franks advises against any publicity regarding the shooting and Jim Burns gives a sketchy television interview. However the delusional Katie insists on visiting Spector after watching it and Spector's daughter Olivia also sees it.

His Troubled Thoughts
Stella and Jim Burns face separate enquiries into the events of Spector's arrest and shooting whilst Burns questions Stella's inclusion of Tom Anderson in her investigation. Consequently Stella alerts her team to then need to present a cast iron case against Spector as she gathers more evidence. Sally Ann is forced to take her children out of school after their father's naming in the press exposes them to victimization whilst in hospital Spector comes to after his operation and is visited by his wife who has appointed hot shot lawyer Sean Healy to defend him.

The Gates of Light
Stella is shocked by Spector's journal illustrating his crimes though aware it can be used as evidence against him, since he is claiming to have no recollection of any events during the past six years. Healy tries to use this to prevent his standing trial at the preliminary hearing but the district judge commits him to crown court, ordering his detention at a secure psychiatric hospital under the supervision of Dr Larson. Meanwhile Tom Anderson tells Stella that David Alvarez, who was in the same care home as Spector, was imprisoned for murder in London in 2002.

The Hell Within Him
Stella is horrified to see that Sally Ann has tried to kill herself and her family whilst Katie Benedetto is arrested and held in custody after her delusional devotion to Spector has led to an attack on one of Spector's detractors. Having played on the sympathies of gullible, religious nurse Sheridan Spector is transferred to the Foyle psychiatric unit where Stella discusses him with Dr Larsen, warning him that Spector is still extremely devious. Spector's lawyers meanwhile plot to prove that Stella's interrogation of him was illegal. Stella has a long conversation with Rose whilst Tom Anderson is sent to London to see David Alvarez.

Wounds of Deadly Hate
Dr Larson begins his assessment on Spector, who opens up about the life he can remember before his amnesia, while the killer's legal team remain determined he will never stand trial, bringing Gibson's conduct under further scrutiny.

Their Solitary Way
Spector admits to his lawyers and later to Tom Anderson that he was involved in the London murder eight years earlier but when Stella suggests Alvarez took the blame out of gratitude for saving him from, sexual abuse at their care home he reacts by attacking her. This splits his defenders as Ms. Wallace, appalled by his violence, quits the team though Healy aims to press ahead citing insanity in mitigation. As Larson becomes more aware of Spector's lies Stella defuses Katie Benedetto's obsession with some success whilst Spector indulges in a gruesome act which will ultimately close the case against him.
