The succession to the crown of England is in doubt and causes King Henry's daughter and nephew to compete for the throne. Church politics see Philip, a monk, elected the new prior, which leaves him indebted to Deacon Waleran.

Master Builder
A fire destroys Kingsbridge church, giving Tom, son Alfred and stepson Jack the chance to build a new cathedral. Prior Philip learns the power of politics when he gets caught between Bishop Waleran and the Hamleighs' quest for Shiring Castle. Kingsbridge is rocked by the accusation of Ellen being a witch.William takes Aliena and Richard by surprise in a brutal attack. Aliena makes a promise to her father.

Aliena protests her father's imprisonment. Prior Philip and William find themselves in a standoff over access to stone in the Shiring quarry. Jack's artistic talents take hold as he begins to carve a statue to honor the cathedral relic. King Stephen visits the cathedral worksite, but collapses in a fit of terror. Aliena starts a fleece business to help earn money for Richard's chance to become a knight.

Upon the death of his father, William Hamleigh hopes to be named the new Earl of Shiring but Richard of Kingsbridge, Aliena's brother is proving himself to be a worthy knight in the service of King Stephen. In Kingsbridge, the work on the new cathedral continues. Jack and Aliena have developed affections for one another. Prior Philip and Bishop Waleran clash once again and Waleran conspires with the Hamleighs to shut down the thriving Kingsbridge market and move it to Shiring. After four years, King Stephen and Princess Maude are still at war over the succession. She is under siege in Lincoln castle and awaits the arrival of her brother and his army. In the ensuing battle, both sides manage to capture a key prisoner. The results of the battle also provide Waleran with the upper hand against Philip.

Waleran and Regan engineer the prisoner exchange so that they remain on the winning side of the war. Tom wants Jack and Alfred to be friends, but their rivalry over their work lives and Aliena is too intense. Meanwhile, William decides to attack Kingsbridge as a way to stop the fleece fair and Aliena's success. The Hamleighs and Prior Philip are granted rights to Shiring land, but it comes with a price.

Richard returns from war to find his sister penniless, with no more money to support his knighthood. Alfred offers himself to Prior Philip as master-builder. Aliena has to choose between her love for Jack and her oath to her father. Regan forces Waleran to speak to the King about William's long-delayed Earldom. A disaster at Kingsbridge becomes a way for Waleran to remove Prior Philip from his position.

New Beginnings
In Saint Denis, France Jack learns of Euclidean geometry which provides him with the key to building a stone structure that can withstand its own weight. Aliena and the baby have been searching for him and find him there. They decide to return to Kingsbridge but while waiting for transport in Cherbourg he discovers his father's family and learns that his father was on the White Ship that burned and killed Prince William, the heir to Henry I's throne and King Stephen's predecessor. In Kingsbridge, Philip is no longer Prior but receives a surprising offer from Bishop Waleran to be his Archdeacon and be in charge of the area while Waleran goes off to Rome. Jack and Aliena are warmly received by everyone except Alfred who, not surprisingly, still bears a grudge. Jack proposes to re-start the work on the cathedral and brings with him a weeping statue of the Madonna and Child. Waleran and the Hamleighs continue to plot against Kingsbridge but this time the residents prepare for an attack.

The Work of Angels
Some 10 years have now passed and Jack is approaching the end of building the cathedral. During a storm however, he notices that some of the mortar between the stone is being ground down. He manages to find both the cause of the loose stones as well as the solution. Richard returns to England from the Crusades in the Holy Land more determined than ever to regain Shiring and the title that he feels is rightly his. King Stephen's son grants him what he wants, but Richard will have to take Shiring castle by force if he is to regain his title. Waleran for his part devises a plot to convict Jack of murder and to execute him. In the course of the trial however, the truth about Waleran's role in the death of Prince William and the burning of the White Ship is revealed.
